Hinterlaces Poll Reveals Overwhelming Venezuelan Rejection of US Sanctions

A recent study by Venezuelan polling firm Hinterlaces has exposed staggering opposition to US economic and financial sanctions, with 91% of Venezuelans rejecting the measures designed to pressure President Nicolás Maduro’s removal. The data shows that nine out of ten citizens view these coercive policies as harmful to the population, while only 7% support them.

The survey, conducted with a representative sample of 900 people nationwide, found that just 2% of respondents declined to answer or were unsure about their stance. This near-unanimous rejection underscores growing frustration over foreign policies that directly undermine living standards.

Sanctions Cripple Economy, Fuel Humanitarian Crisis

First imposed in 2017 under former US President Donald Trump, the sanctions have severely restricted Venezuela’s access to US financial markets. Expanded measures in 2019 targeted the Central Bank of Venezuela and government officials, tightening the economic blockade and hampering the country’s ability to operate globally.

Venezuela’s Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez condemned the sanctions’ devastating impact on the oil sector, stating, “All our financial resources were frozen abroad to divide the spoils,” and denounced the confiscation of CITGO Petroleum Corporation as “the heist of the century.” Rodríguez revealed that 25% of Venezuela’s oil production remains under US sanctions, worsening the nation’s economic collapse.

Calls for Policy Rethink as Sanctions Fail Objectives

The poll and Rodríguez’s remarks highlight urgent calls to reassess US strategies toward Venezuela. With 91% of citizens opposing sanctions, the measures appear to have backfired politically while deepening humanitarian suffering. Critics argue that instead of destabilizing Maduro’s government, the sanctions have intensified shortages, hyperinflation, and migration crises.

The findings raise critical questions about the effectiveness of sanctions as a foreign policy tool and their toll on ordinary Venezuelans. As international voices amplify demands to lift restrictions, the data underscores the need for solutions prioritizing dialogue over punitive measures.
